Celebrators doubled their pleasure last week at Sovereign Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

Two milestones were marked April 26 - the church's first anniversary and the formal installation of the Rev. Dr. John Wiers, its organizing pastor.

"Sovereign Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church was founded by a group of Quad-Cities residents to fill a spiritual need in the area with a Biblically-based, Christ-centered church that teaches historic Presbyterian and Reformed beliefs," Rev. Wiers said.

The congregation meets at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday school and at 10:45 a.m. for worship services at its temporary location in Christian Friendliness Youth Hope Center, 3928 12th Ave., Moline.

"The Biblical message will always be at the heart of what we do, and when we grasp that God has reached out to us totally because of His grace and because of nothing that we have done in any way, shape or form, that is a wonderful message to bring to the Quad-Cities.  Our emphasis on the sovereign grace of God is desperately needed everywhere.

It's not a new emphasis or belief.  The Orthodox Presbyterian Church long has understood the importance of defending and maintaining the truths of God's word.  The church believes what the Bible says, and we try to put it into practice."

"The church carries out its mission through three ministry committees - Christian education, home missions and church extension, and foreign missions.  Each committee works to bring glory to God and proclaim Christ to the nation and world, teaching people to obey what He has commanded," Rev. Wiers said.

Most recently Rev. Wiers worked as a pastor at Hope Evangelical Church, Presbyterian Church in America, in North Liberty, Iowa. He also has taught religion courses at the University of Iowa and served as an adjunct professor of religion at Kirkwood Community College, Iowa City campus.

"I have obtained further academic training in the fields of religious history and theology and, for a time, I pursued a career in higher education, but I believe that the Lord led me back into the pastorate in a situation where I could serve as a part-time adjunct instructor in various colleges while still serving as pastor."
